Hatcher Pass

Welcome to the 2021/2022 Season!
Regular avalanche center operations will begin mid-November. Until then check back here for periodic updates, especially surrounding storm cycles.
It’s looking like winter up high in the mountains. While it may seem early, if there is snow in the mountains, avalanches are possible. October is notorious for surprising people with avalanches at Hatcher Pass. Already reports of avalanches have come in from Turnagain Arm and Chugach State Park.
Make sure to bookmark the observations page for the most recent observations and reports from our community. There are already a number of observations posted and it’s worth checking these out before heading into the hills.

GEAR
It’s time to pull out our avalanche kit and go through our gear with a fine tooth comb. Check beacons for corrosion issues, add fresh batteries, complete range and function tests, test our airbags functionality, and the integrity of our shovels and probes. Replace old and/or broken gear, as our lives depend on it. It’s an exciting time of year, and we all want to be prepared before we get into the snowy backcountry.
